Most of the advice circulating about this interview is preparation for the wrong thing. It is not a quiz about your host city. It is an assessment of whether your plan holds together.

The short answer
Treat an interview as the default, not the exception. The guidance makes it mandatory unless you were already assessed as a genuine student in an earlier application with nothing material changed, or your application is part of a sampled batch.
Missing it without an acceptable reason is an automatic refusal.

Read that list again and notice what is not on it. There is nothing about local geography, nothing about memorised facts, and nothing about performing enthusiasm. It is about coherence.
What coherence looks like in practice
The caseworker is deciding whether your account of yourself hangs together. The strongest position is simply being able to explain, without hesitation:
- Why this course specifically, rather than a similar one
- Why this university, and how you found it
- How it connects to what you have already studied or done
- What you intend to do afterwards
- Who is paying, and how that money came to be there
That last one matters more than people expect. Your financial circumstances are on the assessment list, so an answer about your funding that does not match your bank statements is a problem in two places at once.
The preparation most people do is the wrong preparation
Agents and forums circulate lists of city trivia to memorise. The guidance says outright that a caseworker cannot refuse you for lacking knowledge of where you will be studying, and names bus routes as the example.
Time spent memorising your campus postcode is time not spent being able to explain your own plan.
Attendance is the one thing with no flexibility
Almost everything else in the process involves a judgement call. This does not. Failure to attend, with no reason or an unacceptable one, means the caseworker must refuse.
Practical consequences: watch the email address you used on the application, including spam, and if something genuinely prevents you attending, tell them before the slot rather than after.
